《奇異博士2：失控多重宇宙》上映後便奪得 1.5 億美元票房的好成績，但是有不少影迷開始質疑這部電影的分級是否不正確？在美國《奇異博士2：失控多重宇宙》被定為 PG-13 （特別輔導級）而非 R 級，一派觀眾覺得美國電影協會應該要給予它更高的年齡限制分級。

《奇異博士2：失控多重宇宙》因偶爾會出現暴力的畫面和令人不舒服的恐怖元素，讓不少網友認為應該評定為限制級 R ，而其他人則讚揚導演山姆雷米將這部片推到了電影分級制度的極限。

I've disagreed with many MPAA ratings, but I think PG-13 is perfectly acceptable for "Doctor Strange 2."

IMO, "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom", one of the films that led to PG-13 being created, is more intense and violent than DS2.

PG-13 分級是在 1984 年創建的，為了像《魔宮傳奇》這樣的電影包含過多的暴力內容，並不適合家庭友好的 PG 評級，但又不到R級的標準，PG-13 這個新的分級就此誕生了。PG-13 的電影允許暴力元素，但通常不會過於現實又極端暴力。

而《奇異博士2 》可能是迄今為止最恐怖的 MCU 作品，但這部電影卻獲得了 PG-13 分級認證，因為大部分的暴力和恐怖元素都是由超級英雄和超級惡棍所引起的，這就是為什麼本片會獲得PG-13分級的原因。

由於漫威的超級英雄電影皆是由迪士尼出品，迪士尼影業的宗旨是闔家歡樂、大人小孩都能一起觀賞的電影，因此這次《奇異博士2 》的風格轉換，也不意外讓一直以來習慣闔家歡樂風格電影的影迷嚇到了。
